Pinellas Urban League Creates Jobs Through Recovery Act

Congresswoman Kathy Castor toured a "weatherized" St. Petersburg home today to view energy-efficient improvements and jobs being spread throughout the community by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Due to its success over the past year, the Pinellas County Urban League won another $1.5 million to expand its weatherization initiative, create jobs and save local residents on electric bills.

BP Spent $93 Million in Advertising From April-July 2010

In a letter to Congresswoman Kathy Castor today, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Waxman and Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Chairman Stupak released findings of how much BP has spent on advertising since the oil disaster. The findings were released to Castor because she prompted the probe.

Castor, Sanchez Talk About Exports and Jobs

This announcement by the Obama Administration is a good first step. The Interior Department and Minerals Management Service, unfortunately, have historically allowed oil companies to skirt regulations and not file environmental assessments and impact statements, another indication of the too-cozy, revolving door relationship between the regulators and the oil companies.

Castor Promises to Protect Social Security

Congresswoman Kathy Castor and local seniors rallied today to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Social Security at Fountainview Estates, a 55 and older community in northwest Hillsborough County. Castor, a member of the House Seniors Task Force, is working to strengthen Social Security and fight off attempts in Washington to cut benefits.

House Approves Oil Disaster Legislation

The oil disaster legislation that passed the U.S. House of Representatives today will hold the oil industry accountable for disaster cleanup, strengthen oversight of the oil drilling industry, restore the Gulf Coast and eliminate the current $75 million limit on what an oil company can be required to pay small businesses and individuals for losses they incur as a result of an oil disaster.

Castor Proposes Measures to Improve Oil Disaster Response

Congresswoman Kathy Castor has proposed four amendments to the oil disaster response package, which is expected to be considered by the U.S. House of Representatives this week. Castor’s amendments focus on ensuring oil drilling remains far from Florida’s coasts; helping our region’s fishermen and small businesses; guaranteeing expert input as the Gulf Coast recovers from the disaster; and protecting the environment in parts of the country where drilling is currently allowed.
