The following information is designed to provide practical information to improve the energy efficiency of homeowners and rental property owners. 10 Tips for Energy Efficiency in the Home:
« Carpool, walk, ride a bike, use mass transit, or work at home to save 5.85 gallons of gas and 143 billon tons of CO² each week. « Replace your light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFL). If every house used only 1 CFL, it would be equivalent to removing 1 million cars from the road. « Set your thermostat at 78 degrees in the summer and 68 degrees in the winter. Heating/cooling your home accounts for about 45% of a home’s total energy use. « Seal your doors and windows because the average home causes more pollution than our car because of the fossil fuels burned to supply the power we need. « Aim for 5 minute or less showers to save energy. « Recycle and use refillable and reusable containers. « When buying new products, look for Energy Star labels on all products. « Wash only full loads when using the clothes washer or dishwasher. « Only heat or cool the rooms you need—close vents and doors of unused rooms. « Power your voice by writing your public officials to encourage them to support energy efficient initiatives. |
