WASHINGTON -- Today, U.S. Reps. Kathy Castor (FL-14) and Carolyn Maloney (NY-12) called for equal pay for women including female U.S. athletic champions like the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. Reps. Castor and Maloney filed a congressional resolution calling for a sense of Congress on the matter. As Women’s World Cup champions, FIFA will award $2 million to the U.S. team, while the winners of the 2014 Men’s World Cup were awarded $35 million. “The Women’s World Cup this year brought record-breaking attendance and viewership and we are urging that FIFA treat the female champions equitably and also devote more resources to the growing women’s sport,” U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor said. The resolution was filed this morning just as the NYC Ticker Tape Parade got underway in honor of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team. U.S. Reps. Castor serves as a co-chair of the Congressional Soccer Caucus and has condemned corruption at FIFA uncovered by recent indictments and called for more female representation within FIFA’s governance.
