Co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Soccer Caucus, including U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL), are condemning corruption at FIFA uncovered by the recent indictments and calling for better governance and integrity. Members of the Soccer Caucus intend to express their concerns in a letter to Sunil Gulati, president of the U.S. Soccer Federation. “The soccer world requires reform and I stand behind a reexamination for the bids for Qatar and Russia World Cups and hope other members of FIFA will too,” U.S. Rep. Castor said. “Unless bold action is taken, such corruption will leave a lasting scar on the sport. Therefore we urge the U.S. Soccer Federation to take an active role in weeding out the corruption and building a better reputation in the wake of the scandal.” Members of the Soccer Caucus are also calling for better female representation, especially with the Women’s World Cup approaching. “FIFA should see the women’s game as a huge growth potential and support for women’s soccer is a solid investment in FIFA’s future,” U.S. Rep. Castor added. ### |
