WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Kathy Castor announced today sizeable new investments for important local priorities that will spur jobs in the Tampa Bay area. The new resources were included in the 2009 appropriations bill, which passed in the House. “Significant investments in the Tampa Bay area economy will preserve jobs and provide a shot in the arm to the local economy,” Castor said. Castor secured $4.2 million for dredging and maintenance at the Port of Tampa and an additional $478,000 for widening of the channel. The Port of Tampa is among the most vital economic engines in our community. The widening money will promote expansion of the port and help alleviate traffic congestion in the channel where delays now occur. The channel handles traffic in and out of Tampa Bay for the Ports of Tampa, Manatee and St. Petersburg. Castor also secured $285,000 to fund a dental clinic at Hillsborough Community College. The HCC clinic provides dental education for college students, preparing them for jobs at dental offices and also serves a critical mission by providing much-needed oral health care to low-income adults and children. Castor is also delivering $190,000 for the city of St. Petersburg’s summer youth employment program for at-risk youth. The well-received program provides summer jobs to 14- to 23-year-old St. Petersburg residents from working-class families. The two-month summer internship offers valuable job experience and encourages interns to later gain full-time employment. Students use these internships as stepping stones to careers.
