U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL) joined top military commanders in criticizing the Republican budget gimmick that leaves the Pentagon unsure about future funding and takes the country down a fiscally irresponsible path. Despite the warnings, House Republicans today passed a $579 billion defense spending bill -- above the ceiling of $523 billion set by the 2011 Murray Ryan Budget Control Act. The bill also drew criticism because in addition to busting the caps, $88 billion of the total $579 billion represents Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) funds – unstable funds with limited uses. The bill passed by a vote of 278-149.

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL), who has been working for more engagement with Cuba to advance human rights for the Cuban people, is speaking out against language, or “riders,” added to U.S. House Appropriations Committee bills that would block President Obama’s new policy on Cuba and urging her House colleagues to support amendments that would remove these riders. The U.S. House is scheduled to vote on the first of these amendments today.

Co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Soccer Caucus, including U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL), are condemning corruption at FIFA uncovered by the recent indictments and calling for better governance and integrity. Kathy Castor (D-Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL) received word of the official removal of Cuba from the U.S. State Sponsor of Terrorism list at the moment she was reviewing the history of the Tampa-based consulate with the former Tampa Cuban Consul, 90-year-old Raul Villamia. U.S. Rep. Castor pledged to him that she would work to return the consulate to Tampa.
