Tampa Bay receives $5.9M navigator grant -- largest in the nation

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL) announced that the University of South Florida will once again receive the largest “navigator” grant in the nation from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to assist families and consumers shop and enroll in the health insurance marketplace. USF was awarded $5,912,400, an increase of more than $500,000 over last year’s grant amount. U.S. Rep. Castor released the following statement regarding this grant award:

U.S. Rep. Castor's statement on nuclear disarmament agreement

The historic nuclear disarmament agreement announced today between the United States, Iran, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, China, and the European Union requires thorough review and analysis over the coming weeks. My overriding concern is whether or not the agreement is in the national security interest of the United States. Iran must be blocked from proceeding any further towards developing a nuclear weapon. Aggressive, enforceable restrictions and thoroughly transparent inspections at any time are fundamental to approval of such an agreement. I have no illusions about the dreadful record and conduct of the Iranian regime, or the destabilizing influence Iran continues to have in the region. No matter what, all options must remain on the table in case Iran deviates from the terms of this agreement in any way.

U.S. Rep. Castor underscores equal pay for women -- including U.S. athletic champions

Today, U.S. Reps. Kathy Castor (FL-14) and Carolyn Maloney (NY-12) called for equal pay for women including female U.S. athletic champions like the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. Reps. Castor and Maloney filed a congressional resolution calling for a sense of Congress on the matter. As Women’s World Cup champions, FIFA will award $2 million to the U.S. team, while the winners of the 2014 Men’s World Cup were awarded $35 million.

U.S. Rep. Castor opposes Republican Education bill that slashes funding for public schools nationwide

Today the U.S. House of Representatives will consider the harmful Republican education overhaul that undermines the commitment to a quality education for all students across America. Republicans propose to slash overall education funding, including an unconscionable diversion of funds from working-class students to wealthier school districts -- perpetrating a reverse Robin Hood on the most disadvantaged children. Indeed, Hillsborough County Public Schools stands to lose $3.6 million in Title I funding this year alone, according to a White House report. Overall, the Republican bill proposes to slash an estimated $437 million from Florida public schools over the coming years.
