Congresswoman Kathy Castor released the following statement today upon the shooting of her friend and colleague, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords:

"Gabby is a smart, hard working, highly respected member of the U.S. Congress. We were elected together in 2006 and formed an instant friendship, serving together on the Armed Services committee. I also had the privilege of joining her at Kennedy Space Center when her husband, Mark, took off in a space shuttle.

"Gabby works day in and day out for her constituents -- just as she was doing Saturday morning. I pray for her speedy recovery and the speedy recovery of all those who were injured in this needless tragedy. I also mourn for those who lost their lives on this terrible day for our country."
