TAMPA – Congresswoman Kathy Castor announced today that the city of Tampa will receive a nearly $4 million grant to hire more firefighters.
“Homeland security is really hometown security,” Castor said. “We count on our first responders to keep us safe”.
The city of Tampa has a critical need to hire and train more firefighters to be ready in case of natural disasters, terrorism or other catastrophes and to accommodate growth and reduce response times.
The money comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s SAFER grants. SAFER stands for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response. Money administered through SAFER grants can be used to hire firefighters, or to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters. The goal of SAFER grants is to help fire departments increase the number of front-line responders.
“This boost to Tampa Fire Rescue will help ensure we have enough first responders,” Castor said. “We must do everything we can to be ready for any disaster.”
“For the past several years, Mayor Iorio has been working to add firefighters to the department,” Castor said. “With tough budget times at the state and local level, I am pleased we can find resources to help keep our neighbors safe.”
