U.S. Rep. Castor meets with Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez

Today, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL) met with Cuban dissident Yoani Sanchez to discuss human rights, lifting the embargo and improving engagement between the American people and Cuban people. Ms. Sanchez and her blog, Generación Y, are focused on improved human rights in Cuba. Ms. Sanchez has been touring the United States since March 14.

Proposal to Limit Cuban-American Travel Removed

U.S. Representative Kathy Castor today urged Congressional appropriators to remove a harmful legislative policy rider that would reinstitute harsh travel restrictions on Cuban-American families. Castor and the Tampa Bay business community oppose efforts by Congressional Republicans to retain a proposal introduced by U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart to limit family travel to once every three years. The restriction is being considered this week as part of the fiscal year 2012 appropriations “megabus” bill.

After years of working on behalf of Tampa’s Cuban-American families, Congresswoman Kathy Castor announced today that a charter airline company has received the first landing rights for flights from Tampa International Airport to Havana. This significant development means that direct, nonstop flights can start as early as September from Tampa to the island nation.
