U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL14) issued the following statement upon passage of a resolution to establish a bipartisan committee that will investigate the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol: “America deserves the truth about the deadly January 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol and our democracy. Police officers struggled for hours, many were injured and some died as a result of the attack. There are many unanswered questions about the funding and organization of the attack, and we must get to the bottom of it. Republicans in Congress are afraid of the truth and dishonor the police by their opposition. But just like the 9/11 Commission, America needs a full understanding surrounding the events of that day. “I’m eternally grateful to law enforcement officers who fought off the racist mob that day. Today, I voted once more to establish a committee because we owe it to these heroes and those who died to issue a comprehensive report and ensure our neighbors are safe when they visit the Capitol in the days ahead.” On May 19, the House passed H.R. 2333, legislation to establish a nonpartisan National Commission to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol – with an overwhelming majority (252-175) including 35 Republicans. However, Senate Republicans blocked the outside commission. |
