Rep. Castor Statement on Passing of Rep. Alcee Hastings

Congressman Alcee Hastings was a giant of the House. He was committed to civil rights and consistently looked out for “the little guy” throughout his career. He was a fierce fighter for civil rights, Florida’s environment and human rights around the globe. His neighbors had full confidence in him as they re-elected him to the House of Representatives for 15 terms over 30 years.

Congressman Hastings was particularly supportive of me when I was elected to Congress, and I have immense respect for him, especially after serving together on the powerful Rules Committee. He did not suffer fools and often called out inequities and unfairness no matter the source. I will miss his fiery speeches and sharp intellect. As the Dean of the Florida Delegation, he was a friend and mentor and was committed to bringing all of Florida’s members together to work on issues across the state.  He loved Florida and his constituents, and we can all respect how he fought for them every day.  Such wisdom and spirit. Florida can never afford to lose someone like Congressman Hastings, but especially now.

On behalf of my neighbors across the Tampa Bay area, my family and I send condolences to his family, friends and constituents.
