U.S. Rep. Castor Introduces National Voter Registration Day Resolution

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL14) introduced a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize September 24, 2019 as National Voter Registration Day.

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL14) introduced a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize September 24, 2019 as National Voter Registration Day.

National Voter Registration Day was created in 2012 as a way to raise awareness about the need for Americans to register to vote and keep their registration current.  The September 24th date raises awareness prior to the 30-day registration deadline from Election Day that many states observe.

“Our democracy is being tested every day.  Public participation renews America’s grand experiment and strengthens the ties that bind us as citizens.  Dr. King reminded us in his ‘Give us the Ballot’ speech that voting is the bedrock of democracy and hence the cornerstone of change,” said U.S. Rep. Castor.  “ Dr. King called voting a ‘sacred right’ and denying that right ‘a tragic betrayal of the highest mandates of our democratic tradition’.  This resolution reaffirms our commitment to our sacred rights and especially the right to vote.”

Earlier this year, U.S. Rep. Castor championed another voter and election protection bill, the historic reform package – H.R. 1, the For The People Act.  H.R. 1 fights voter suppression, reaffirms commitment to the Voting Rights Act, stands against big money’s influence in politics and tackles corruption.  Like the National Voter Registration Day resolution, H.R. 1 returns power back to the American people.

“I am honored to introduce the resolution in the U.S. House that designates September 24th as National Voter Registration Day to reaffirm our commitment to bedrock democratic values.  A strong democracy  and exercising ones fundamental right to vote should not be a partisan issue.”
