Today, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL14) issued the statement below following the announcement of Monsignor Higgins' passing:

"Monsignor Laurence Higgins was Tampa’s humble counselor and priest. He lived his vows to care for the 'least of us' and often used his wonderful sense of humor to spread his message.  He was a voice for peace, respect and reason in a busy and complicated world. He promoted St. Lawrence as a center for the community where diverse groups  and people were welcomed and loved.  It is indeed a sad day for my hometown, but I know the Monsignor would want us to have in our hearts part of an old Irish blessing‎: 'When the road you walk is dark,  May you always hear, Even in your hour of sorrow, The gentle singing of the lark.' I will dearly miss him."
