Dear friend,As our nation grapples with another senseless mass shooting of school children and educators, I urge everyone to press lawmakers to pass comprehensive gun safety legislation and do more to reach disaffected young people.Last year, House Democrats passed the most significant gun violence prevention legislation in over 30 years – the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – which was signed into law by President Biden. The Safer Communities Act is a significant mental health law that expands vital health services and provides support for States and districts to design and enhance initiatives that will promote safer, more inclusive, and positive school environments. (Florida recently passed on drawing down other safety-related grant funding however.) We can do more by passing universal background checks, reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing loopholes to ensure that people who should not have guns cannot get their hands on them.
Representative Kathy Castor

Dear friend,

As our nation grapples with another senseless mass shooting of school children and educators, I urge everyone to press lawmakers to pass comprehensive gun safety legislation and do more to reach disaffected young people.

Last year, House Democrats passed the most significant gun violence prevention legislation in over 30 years – the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – which was signed into law by President Biden. The Safer Communities Act is a significant mental health law that expands vital health services and provides support for States and districts to design and enhance initiatives that will promote safer, more inclusive, and positive school environments. (Florida recently passed on drawing down other safety-related grant funding however.)

We can do more by passing universal background checks, reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing loopholes to ensure that people who should not have guns cannot get their hands on them.

REPUBLICANS PUT POLLUTERS OVER PEOPLE

This week, I spoke out against Republicans’ dangerous bill – the Polluters over People Act. This bill would roll back environmental protections for clean air, water & energy.

Know that I’m standing up to the powerful special interests that already have too much influence here in the halls of Washington and instead working for you to lower costs, create good paying jobs, and build safe and healthy communities. Watch part of the debate here.

MY COMMITTEES THIS WEEK

It was a busy week in the Energy and Commerce Committee!

My Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations welcomed government witnesses to talk about implementation of three historic laws championed by Congressional Democrats and President Biden – the Inflation Reduction Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law or IIJA, and the CHIPS and Science Act. These laws make unprecedented investments in improving the lives of our neighbors; bringing good-paying jobs to our communities; putting money back in people’s pocketbooks; and ensuring that our children inherit clean air, clean water, and a healthy planet. Watch my remarks here.

I’m proud Florida State University Softball’s Kaley Mudge testified at my Innovation, Data and Commerce Subcommittee’s hearing entitled “Taking the Buzzer Beater to the Bank: Protecting College Athletes’ NIL Dealmaking Rights.” She was here to highlight important NIL considerations for collegiate athletes, especially women, as we celebrate 50 years of Title IX and the equal opportunities the law provides! Watch my remarks here.

PLAN AHEAD AND

RENEW YOUR PASSPORT!

Planning on taking a trip sometime this year? Renew your passport as soon as possible to avoid the long, unprecedented wait time. It can take a few months once you apply, so get it done now.

As always, my office is here to help by calling (727) 369-0201 or (813) 871-2817 to receive assistance with casework or other concerns.

Sincerely,
