Dear friend,
All Floridians can take pride in the fact that we are closer to the arrival of the historic Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune statue in the U.S. Capitol. It was an honor to join many friends and champions last week in Daytona Beach as we unveiled the statue for the first time in the U.S. since arriving from Italy.
The long-awaited arrival of Florida’s statue in the Capitol is on track for early 2022 after her visit to Daytona Beach where she founded Bethune-Cookman University and embarked on her impactful career on equal rights, education, the advancement of veterans and so much more. Dr. Bethune embodies the very best of the Sunshine State – Floridians can take great pride in being represented by the great educator and civil rights icon.
This exhibit in Daytona Beach provides a special opportunity to learn about Dr. Bethune’s life, and I am glad that she is being rightfully recognized here in Florida before she travels to her place of honor in the Capitol. The free Daytona exhibit is open through early December to learn about Dr. Bethune’s life and legacy - seven days a week from 10am – 4pm at Daytona State College’s News-Journal Center, located at 221 N. Beach St. Reserve a time slot by clicking here.
