Dear friend, After three weeks of internal GOP discord and no legislative action in the House, Republicans finally chose a speaker. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) hails from the extreme right wing. He voted to gut Social Security and Medicare, criminalize abortion, repeal marriage equality and end support for Ukraine. Johnson also opposed certification of the full Electoral College results and is a top architect of lawsuits to overturn the results of the 2020 Election, which should be disqualifying to serve as speaker.
In the coming weeks, Congress will consider a request from President Biden for security assistance to Ukraine and Israel, humanitarian assistance to Gaza, border security and childcare affordability - along with the entire appropriations for the fiscal year.

Each year, Members of the U.S. House of Representatives sponsor a nationwide app challenge. Middle school and high school students from the 14th Congressional District may create and submit their original apps for a chance to win the Congressional App Challenge (CAC), encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science.
The winner from the 14th Congressional District will be chosen by a panel of judges and featured on CongressionalAppChallenge.us. The winning app will also be eligible to be on display in the U.S. Capitol, along with other winners from across the country. Click here to submit an app. Apps are due by Wednesday, November 1st.

H.Res. 771 - In the wake of the barbaric attack by Hamas terrorists, I supported the resolution in support of Israel. I am deeply saddened by the brutal murders, rapes and hostage-taking of innocent people. I pray for all of those who've been injured and for all the innocent people in harm's way. America should continue to work to prevent the escalation of a wider war, free hostages and provide safe passage for critical supplies.

H.R. 4394 - House Republicans offered a Department of Energy funding bill that would set America back decades. The GOP always sides with Big Oil over consumers, renewables and energy efficiency. Meanwhile, since the Inflation Reduction Act was signed into law last year, clean energy and energy efficiency projects are booming - 800 clean energy generation projects, 170,000 new clean energy jobs and help for consumer to save on their electric bills.

It was great to meet with the University of South Florida President Rhea Law this week to discuss important issues facing USF students and the next steps for the newest AAU member. USF is a cornerstone of the Tampa Bay Area, transforming lives through education, research & innovation. Go bulls!

I celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Florida House – Floridian’s State Embassy on Capitol Hill – with my colleagues in the Florida Delegation. For 50 years, the Florida House has provided Floridians from across the political spectrum with a taste of home and a sense of belonging and pride. Floridians visiting the nation’s capital can stop by and see the wonderful new statue, “Florida” A Seminole Girl statue by Master Sculptor Nilda Comas.
