Dear friend,I was proud to announce a $1.46 Million Biden Department of Labor workforce grant in Tampa one week ago for the Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa, Inc. to train young people not in school to work in construction and trades and develop the soft skills they need to succeed. Local employers continue to clamor for talented workers – especially in this booming economy where the unemployment rate has stayed below 4% for 27 months straight, which hasn’t happened since the 1960s.
Representative Kathy Castor

Dear friend,

I was proud to announce a $1.46 Million Biden Department of Labor workforce grant in Tampa one week ago for the Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa, Inc. to train young people not in school to work in construction and trades and develop the soft skills they need to succeed. Local employers continue to clamor for talented workers – especially in this booming economy where the unemployment rate has stayed below 4% for 27 months straight, which hasn’t happened since the 1960s.

While we are making progress at home, the least productive Congress in modern times continued to spin its wheels rather than focus on improving the lives of our neighbors and lowering costs. MAGA extremists have been embroiled in shutdowns, showdowns, distractions and dysfunction.

House Republicans say that it is hard to pass laws in a closely divided Congress, but House Democrats had a slim majority last Congress, and we passed the PACT Act, American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act to lower costs and lift our communities.

The PACT Act is taking care of veterans who were exposed to toxic burn pits, Agent Orange and other harmful substances during their service. The American Rescue Plan helped us build the strongest economy in the world after the COVID pandemic. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was the first gun safety bill in 30 years and is making our communities safer. And the Inflation Reduction Act capped insulin at $35 per month, lowered the costs of comprehensive health care coverage through the ACA Marketplace, directed Medicare to negotiate lower prices for a host of prescription drugs, and capped out-of-pocket costs for our older neighbors who rely on Medicare. The IRA is also lowering the cost of energy and reducing pollution by cutting costs, cutting pollution and unleashing a major clean energy manufacturing boom across America.

The key to the success of the last Congress was putting People Over Politics. Unfortunately, MAGA extremists keep Congress stuck in the politics of chaos.

MY COMMITTEE WORK

In my Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, Republicans wasted time attacking National Public Radio.

Public radio plays an invaluable role in communities across America. Our local public radio stations deliver objective reporting on current events—local, national, and international—that is essential to understanding the complex world today. Much of the reporting and features often are not covered by other outlets. NPR and local public radio stations are also indispensable at a time when many local newspapers have gone defunct, and the consolidation of media into large, corporate conglomerates raises questions of objectivity.

Public radio reporting is particularly crucial in Florida, as they provide critical information to residents and visitors during hurricanes and times of crisis.  The radio is a top, trusted choice for receiving local news, weather alerts, traffic updates, community opportunities and so much more.

This Congress will unfortunately go down in history as the least productive in modern times: shutdown threats, showdowns, and wasted time and taxpayer dollars on witch hunts. A better use of time of the Committee would have been asking why guns are the leading cause of death among American children, or finding out whether or not America is prepared for the next pandemic, as the Avian flu spreads among dairy herds, or how we can work together to tackle drug shortage – the list goes on.

VOTES THIS WEEK

GOP partisan messaging bills to boost Big Oil and polluters took precedence over solving problems for everyday American families. I voted “no” on these bills.

H.R. 6912 - would gut cost-saving energy efficiency standards that Congress required the Department of Energy (DOE) to update for household appliances and drive up already-high electric bills.

H.R. 2925 - would amend existing mining laws, allowing mining companies to acquire rights to public lands without an intention to mine and blocking renewable energy development, conservation and recreational use of public lands.

H.R. 7109 - would require the Census to include a citizenship question, run counter to the U.S. Constitution and negatively impact participation in the Census.

As always, you can call my office at (813) 871-2817 or (727) 369-0201.

I hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

lc
