TrumpCare Bill Harsh on Florida Families, Threatens Progress Made Under the ACA

On the seventh anniversary of the landmark Affordable Care Act that significantly expanded health insurance coverage across America, the GOP is trying to ram through a repeal bill that would undo our nation’s progress and rip coverage away from 24 million Americans while forcing millions of families to pay more for less benefits.

“The TrumpCare bill continues to get worse as President Trump and Speaker Ryan continue to propose harmful provisions such as the removal of emergency care, mental health care, hospital coverage, and prescriptions from insurance policies.  The final bill language has yet to be released while the public has been left waiting to see what provisions will be added to win votes from the right-wing Tea Party caucus,” U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL14) said. “Republicans also target children, Alzheimer patients and people with disabilities who rely on Medicaid health services, which for 50 years has kept middle-class families out of poverty when a serious family health challenge hits. The Republican bill also shortens the life of the Medicare Trust Fund by three years.  Incredibly the bill exacts all of this damage on American families in order to send billions of tax dollars to the wealthy few. TrumpCare amounts to the largest transfer of wealth from working families to the rich in our nation’s history, passing $600 billion in tax breaks to the rich and big corporations.”

Vice Ranking Member of the powerful U.S. House Energy & Commerce Committee, U.S. Rep. Castor helped to craft the ACA so that it works for Florida families and today, the ACA has sustained progress. “I urge my GOP colleagues to listen to my neighbors and many across the country who finally have financially security and peace of mind when it comes to their health, but today have their lives and peace of mind abruptly rattled waiting on the rushed vote of TrumpCare,” U.S. Rep. Castor said.

Summary of TrumpCare:

• Higher Costs – TrumpCare forces families to pay higher premiums and deductibles, increasing out-of-pocket costs.

• Less Coverage – TrumpCare will take away health care from 24 million hard-working Americans.

• A Crushing Age Tax – TrumpCare forces Americans aged 50-64 to pay premiums five times higher than what others pay for health coverage, no matter how healthy they are.

• Steals from Medicare – TrumpCare shortens the life of the Medicare Trust Fund by 3 years and ransacks funds that seniors depend on to get the long-term care they need.
