Dear friend,President Biden and President Zelenskyy have rallied freedom-loving people across the world to stand up for democracy in opposition to Putin’s unprovoked war.  And the House passed another significant military and humanitarian aid package for Ukraine this week. The bipartisan package passed 368-57 (all 57 votes against aiding Ukraine came from Republicans). The aim is to speed resources to the Ukrainians and NATO allies and help refugees, but the package is being held up needlessly in the Senate by a GOP senator. The House also voted to implement additional sanctions to isolate Russian leaders from global organizations and exact harsh financial sanctions to punish Putin and oligarchs.
Representative Kathy Castor

Dear friend,

President Biden and President Zelenskyy have rallied freedom-loving people across the world to stand up for democracy in opposition to Putin’s unprovoked war.

PROTECTING REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM

roe

The leaked U.S. Supreme Court opinion to overturn Roe v. Wade demands action. For decades, women, their families and doctors have been rightfully entrusted with decisions on when to have children, but Republican politicians are determined to strip away the right to abortion care. Ultimately they want to outlaw abortion in every state across the U.S. It is a frightful backsliding of rights. America’s leading medical professionals are worried about the health ramifications of banning abortion as well.

The House took action already to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act which would codify Roe into law, but GOP senators blocked the bill this week. I will continue to stand up to ensure that every person – no matter where they live, or how much money they make – can make their own decisions about their bodies, their lives and their futures.

MY COMMITTEES

KCK

This week, my Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health marked up six bills to improve the mental and physical health of our neighbors, including kids-specific legislation related to pediatric cancers and birth defects.

hydropower

My Subcommittee on Energy held a hearing entitled "Modernizing Hydropower: Licensing and Reforms for a Clean Energy Future." Hydropower is one of the oldest sources of renewable energy, and it will play a critical part in responding to the climate crisis as we move forward and break our nation’s costly addiction to oil and gas.

VOTES THIS WEEK

H.R. 5129 – the Community Services Block Grant Modernization Act of 2022 will reauthorize CSBGs for a decade and help ensure that communities have the tools they need to fight poverty and build economic mobility. Over the Covid19 pandemic, we’ve seen the way that CSBG-funded organizations help low-income communities address housing and food insecurity, provide high quality early childhood education, and support individuals re-entering the workforce, and this reauthorization is a much-needed boost to so many local organizations in Tampa and around the nation.

tsa

H.R. 903 – the Rights for the TSA Workforce Act of 2022 will strengthen workplace protections, pay and benefits for our TSA workers at Tampa International Airport and around the country. Changes to current federal law will help boost morale for these critical safety officers who regularly rank lowest in departmental morale and satisfaction of all US agency subcomponents.

tampa fire

H.R. 2499 – Federal Firefighters Fairness Act of 2022 will improve access to injury and illness benefits for federal firefighters and ensure that the federal government stands behind federal firefighters who risk their lives to protect all Americans.

energy import

H.R. 7691 – the Additional Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act: As Putin desperately escalates his war on innocent people, Ukraine faces dire security, economic and humanitarian needs. The Additional Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act will deliver a wide range of resources to assist the Ukrainian people.

union

A Resolution Recognizing Congressional Workers’ Right to Organize: Every worker in America should have the right to organize for livable wages, decent benefits and better working conditions — and that includes right here in Congress. I was proud to vote to pass a resolution to support congressional staff in their efforts to unionize.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I introduced the Advancing Student Services in Schools Today (ASSIST) Act. This important bill would help remove the cost barrier for providers to care for children in schools, with a sustainable funding mechanism to provide effective mental health services to our nation’s youth. This is a commonsense step to keep our youngest neighbors safe, healthy and engaged in school and their community. Learn more here.

WORKING FOR TAMPA

collage 5.22

Last week was jam-packed with action across Tampa. I love seeing so many of our neighbors as we inch closer to the summer. It was great to host the White House Council on Environmental Quality’s Chair, Brenda Mallory, for a roundtable with environmental and community leaders to discuss water quality and to listen to community advocates speak on the lead pollution at Gopher Resource. The Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County Clean Air Fair was back and better than ever, and I’m grateful for so many local groups and leaders who are focused on lower energy bills, clean energy, transit and energy efficiency. I was also proud to announce a $2 million grant to advance cancer research at Moffitt Cancer Center – there are so many researchers and medical professionals working day in and day out to improve cancer outcomes here in our hometown, and this grant will aid this critical, lifesaving work.

Stay safe and healthy, and know that my office remains here to help, 813-871-2817.

Sincerely,
