Dear Friend, It’s Infrastructure Week! Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS and Science Act, America is enjoying a moment where we are repairing and modernizing our roads, bridges, water works, transit, ports, bike paths, riverwalks and broadband. Together, our neighbors across the Tampa Bay area are seeing progress due to sizable federal investments such as “safer streets”, expansion of the Tampa Riverwalk with connections into West Tampa, SunRunner extension in St. Pete, expansion for Port Tampa Bay and so much more. Local leaders and President Biden are incredible partners, and we are just getting started! In fact, Mayor Jane Castor checked in this week to strategize on next steps like improvements in East Tampa and ways to lower electric bills. H.Con.Res. 40 – Policing is a tough job and I am grateful for local law enforcement who keep the peace and keep us safe. We passed a non-binding resolution to recognize local law enforcement officers and their service.

H.R. 3091 – Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act requires a new program for officers to purchase recently retired handguns. While I supported a previous version, the GOP added harmful and superfluous language that turned it into an unreasonable and dangerous gun bill.

H.R. 2494 – POLICE Act of 2023. This bill makes it a deportable offense for any non-U.S. citizen, including legal permanent residents, if they were accused of (but not necessarily convicted of) assaulting first responders. As drafted, it’s too broad and vague and did not earn my vote. |

It is National Law Enforcement Week, and I am thankful every day for our officers in Tampa and St. Pete who keep our neighbors safe and out of harm’s way.

This week, my Energy and Commerce Committee and the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party were busy with hearings.
In the Energy Subcommittee, I reminded my GOP colleagues of the importance of energy efficient appliances and the new discounts in the Inflation Reduction Act. Check out rewiringAmerica.org and you can watch my statement here.
In my Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, I discussed the importance of protecting our critical infrastructure from common and sophisticated cyber-attacks. I am doing all I can to protect my neighbors, hospitals, and federal agencies from foreign adversaries. View my opening statement here.
Additionally, Democrats have taken historic steps to lower costs and ramp up cleaner, cheaper energy in America’s competitiveness to counter China. Watch here for my questions at last night’s hearing to identify gaps in how America can continue being a global leader.

Thanks to American Rescue Plan funds, Hillsborough students can receive a free Chromebook this Friday, May 19th, at C. Blythe Andrews, Jr. Public Library , 2607 E. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Tampa, FL 33610. The Emergency Connectivity Fund is a $7.171 billion program funded by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 to help schools and libraries support remote learning. The Program will provide funding to schools and libraries for the reasonable costs of eligible equipment and services that can be provided to students, teachers, and library patrons who lack connected devices, such as laptop or tablet computers, and/or lack broadband access during the pandemic. This is a critical step during Infrastructure Week to recommit to President Biden’s promise of building equitable broadband access for all, leading us successfully into the Infrastructure Decade.
