Dear friend,

I am wishing all Tampa Bay area students, teachers, and educators a wonderful school year! To celebrate the start of the 2024 school year, I checked out the new clean electric school buses coming to Hillsborough County Public Schools with the Environmental Defense Fund and Mom’s Clean Air Force.

CELEBRATING TWO YEARS OF THE PACT ACT WITH DEP. SECRETARY BRADSHER!

Bradsher

I welcomed VA Deputy Secretary Tanya Bradsher to Bay Pines to celebrate the two-year anniversary of the historic PACT Act that expands health care for veterans exposed to burn pits and toxins like Agent Orange. In Florida alone, over 100,000 veterans have been screened and approved for care! This monumental reform ensures our service members get the benefits they deserve.

Thanks to the wonderful staff at Bay Pines, our veterans and their families are in good hands. Read about a local Tampa Bay area veteran whose life changed for the better, thanks to the PACT Act.

ST. PETE IS ON THE MOVE!

SunRunner

The SunRunner, taking neighbors from the burg to the beach, just keeps getting better and better! It was great to celebrate the PSTA’s new SunRunner stop on First Ave N which will connect our vibrant downtown and waterfront businesses right to the beach!

Accessible, affordable public transit is the way of the future, and we are ready to hop on board!

DEMOCRATS ARE LOWERING THE PRICE OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS!

The Inflation Reduction Act is savings Americans a lot, including lowering the price of insulin for seniors to $35/month, and paving the way for Medicare to negotiate the price of the highest-cost drugs. Right now, Americans pay two to three times more for prescription drugs than they would anywhere else. But the Biden-Harris Administration and House Democrats finally beat back the Big Pharma lobbyists.

Check out the new prices, which will be a godsend to our older neighbors. Read my full statement here.

DESANTIS' GREED PUTS PROFITS OVER OUR PLANET

Florida natural spaces are unique and special and I adamantly oppose Governor DeSantis’ radical plan to literally pave paradise and put up a pickleball court. He aims to sell out our most beloved parks to the highest bidder under the guise of outdoor recreation. Florida’s unique natural lands and habitats—our state’s identity and way of life—should not be bulldozed to cut developers a cheap deal. DeSantis’ plan will harm our state’s ability to draw over 30 million visitors as many come to enjoy our natural places. This move marks the latest effort by the Governor to prioritize profits over the planet, following his administration’s repeated anti-environment, anti-climate actions.

This week, Governor DeSantis announced an alarming new initiative to develop golf courses, hotels, pickleball courts, and more in many of our most beloved state parks. Reporting from the Tampa Bay Times and other outlets indicates that the Governor is proposing new projects that may lead to severe environmental destruction and habitat loss. I urge Floridians to weigh in with the Governor, their legislators - and attend the hearing August 27. We cannot allow DeSantis to railroad this proposal through!

These ridiculous projects include: multiple 18-hole golf courses at Jonathan Dickinson State Park on Florida’s Atlantic Coast, 350-room park lodges at both Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine and Topsail Hill Preserve State Park on Santa Rosa Beach, up to four pickleball courts each at seven state parks, a disc golf course at five state parks, and a suite of new cabins at three parks. In Tampa Bay, plans call for up to four pickleball courts at both Honeymoon Island State Park and Hillsborough River State Park, with the addition of a disc golf course at the latter, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
