Dear friend,  June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month. Every day, over 100 Americans lose their lives to gun violence. There have been over 275 mass shootings this year, and death by firearms is the leading cause of death for children in America - a horrendously grim reality. Seven years ago this week, we tragically lost 49 neighbors in Orlando at the Pulse Night Club. In the immediate aftermath, civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis and I and our Democratic colleagues staged a peaceful sit-in on the House floor to protest inaction by the GOP-led Congress. After Democrats took the majority (and after the Uvalde tragedy), Congress passed and President Biden signed the first gun safety legislation in decades: the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Nevertheless, we must do more to keep guns out of the hands of those who seek to do harm. Specifically, background checks and the reinstitution of the assault weapons ban would be common sense measures to keep Americans safe. Despite the overwhelming support of the American people, House Republicans have failed to show the courage needed to face the gun lobby and save lives. As a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, I am committed to passing legislation that keeps all of our neighbors safe, uplift our communities and put People Over Politics.
Representative Kathy Castor

Dear friend,

June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month.

VOTES LAST WEEK

gaslight

Fresh off a week where the MAGA Republicans stopped work on the House floor, votes were scheduled to prevent the Consumer Product Safety Commission from examining health and safety issues surrounding gas stoves. A second bill to prevent the Department of Energy from updating gas stove energy efficiency standards. Energy efficiency standards save consumers money as appliances are constantly evolving to become more energy efficient.  Republicans described their bills as preventing a ban on gas stoves, but they actually were fearmongering exercises supported by the oil and gas industry. I voted no on H.R. 1615 and H.R. 1640

which would be more appropriately titled the “Gaslighting Acts”.

H.J.Res. 42 –  I supported allowing the District of Columbia to move forward with their Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022 and the President’s veto the resolution.

I strongly opposed H.J. Res. 44 that would nullify the ATF’s stabilizing arm brace rule, which keeps dangerous firearms out of dangerous hands by requiring that guns equipped with stabilizing arm braces be subject to the same requirements as weapons with the same firing power.

I voted “no” on H.R. 277 to give Republicans another opportunity to obstruct federal policymaking, putting critical government functions from civil rights enforcement and financial regulation to protecting consumers and the environment in jeopardy. And we know from recent experience with the GOP manufactured default crisis that they are willing to take any hostage—including the U.S. economy—in order to achieve their partisan political agenda.

I voted “no” on H.R. 288 the so-called “Separation of Powers Restoration Act” or “SOPRA,” would allow unelected judges to impose their will on rules carefully crafted by policy experts at our agencies.

VISIT THE NATION'S CAPITAL

The summer season in the nation’s capital is busy with tours and visitors.

Please watch this story about the Johnson family from Tampa who paid a visit the other week. Dustin and Daniel Johnson recently adopted six siblings from the foster care system who were at risk of being separated.  I was thrilled to meet the family and tour them through the Capitol before they were welcomed by President Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at the White House. Now I know exactly what it means when they say “Love Wins”!
