Samantha Medlock Joins Climate Crisis Committee as Senior Counsel

WASHINGTON (September 4, 2019) - The U.S. House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis has hired Samantha Medlock as senior counsel to focus on climate adaptation and resilience. 

Medlock previously served in the Obama White House Council on Environmental Quality and Office of Management and Budget, where she worked on climate resilience, flood risk, and disaster recovery policy. She also launched a White House partnership with the insurance industry to increase cross-sector collaboration on climate risk management.

Previously, she served on the National Committee on Levee Safety following Hurricane Katrina and co-authored a report to Congress with recommendations to reduce risks associated with levees and floods. Medlock’s background working for local governments and a large utility in Texas led her to join the Association of State Floodplain Managers as their policy counsel in Washington in 2008. Most recently, Medlock led private sector initiatives to advance insurance capabilities to help US cities and businesses manage climate risks and reduce disaster costs.

Medlock is a Juris Doctor graduate with honors of Vermont Law School and earned a Bachelor of Science summa cum laude from Texas Woman’s University. She has served as a member of the Advisory Committee for the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado-Boulder, contributor to the executive education program of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, and an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Santa Barbara & Ventura Colleges of Law.
