WASHINGTON (June 30, 2022) – Chair Kathy Castor of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis released the following statement on Thursday after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in the case of West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency:

“With the rising costs and perils of the climate emergency already harming our communities, we need every tool possible to reduce pollution and save lives,” said Chair Castor. “By hamstringing the EPA’s ability to reduce pollution, the Supreme Court is endangering public health so it can give fossil fuel corporations another handout, brought to you by the extreme, court-packing Republicans who are also blocking clean energy legislation in Congress. As Justice Kagan underscores in her dissent, Congress granted the EPA the authority to respond to the most pressing environmental challenge of our time - and the Court is wrong to dilute this power at the request of polluters and their Republican allies.

“In the House of Representatives, Democrats have already taken bold action to reduce pollution, advance climate solutions, and expand affordable clean energy every chance we get. We remain undeterred in our mission to solve the climate crisis. And we urge anyone concerned about the rising costs of energy and climate change to elect policymakers who support clean energy, who are willing to stand up to polluters, and who will fight for a sustainable and livable future.”
