Chair Castor Lauds Climate Investments in FY2023 Defense Appropriations Bill
WASHINGTON (June 21, 2022) – Chair Kathy Castor of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis released the following statement on Tuesday, after Chair Betty McCollum of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense announced $2.5 billion in investments in clean energy and climate adaptation in the FY2023 Defense funding bill:
"As climate-fueled disasters batter our military installations and threaten our national security, it's crucial that we invest in preparing our military for costly climate impacts," said Chair Castor. "I'm grateful to Chair McCollum for tackling this threat with a $2.5 billion investment, which will boost climate preparedness, expand energy efficiency, and help our troops complete their missions with cutting-edge innovation. Thanks to leaders like Chair McCollum across our Democratic Caucus, we have made important progress on the recommendations in our Climate Crisis Action Plan, which calls for urgent action to confront the national security threats of the climate crisis.
"I'm also grateful to full Committee Chair DeLauro for her leadership in investing in climate action throughout the Appropriations bills. This is what it means to take an all-of-government approach to climate action."
The FY2023 Defense funding bill includes investments for increased resiliency at military installations; improved energy efficiency and logistics; and research into reducing energy demand, improved storage, and other energy supplies.
