Chair Castor Applauds Ruling Stopping Trump's Pro-Polluter Power Plan

WASHINGTON - On Tuesday, Chair Kathy Castor of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis released the following statement, following news that a federal appeals court invalidated the Trump administration's efforts to roll back President Obama's historic Clean Power Plan:
"It looks like we're kicking off a new era of clean energy progress a day early," said Chair Castor. "Today's important ruling will stop one of Trump's most environmentally-destructive efforts, as we get ready to turn the page on four years of climate inaction and science denial. It's almost poetic to see our courts vacate this short-sighted and harmful policy on Trump's last full day in office.
"Reducing pollution from power plants is a vital way to protect public health, meet our climate goals, and ensure justice for vulnerable communities. Today we take one more step in the right direction, and we look forward to making incredible new strides for the American people under the leadership of President-Elect Biden."
Background:
- In June of 2019, the Trump administration announced it would roll back President Obama's Clean Power Plan, which protected Americans by setting new pollution standards for the nation's power plants.
- On Tuesday, a DC circuit court invalidated Trump's effort, saying that his attempted repeal of the Clean Power Plan “rested critically on a mistaken reading of the Clean Air Act.” (link)
